Our Moleskins vs Cords giveaway is now closed

Congratulations to Mr Alex Moor of Bristol, who chose a pair of Moleskins as his prize!

And moles are the clear winners according to our poll, with 85% of the vote. But what’s your autumn trouser of choice – smooth and suave moleskins or comfortable and classic cords?

Here’s a quick run-down to help you decide:

Tale of the tape: Moleskins

Moleskin trousers are a classic, smart-casual alternative to jeans or chinos. Defined by its soft, brushed nap, moleskin is the perfect fabric to keep you warm when the temperature drops.

Traditionally manufactured from cotton in the Lancashire mills, moleskin was a favourite of labourers who enjoyed its soft comfort and tough durability. It came as no surprise when the landed gentry adopted the look, wearing moleskin trousers and jackets to keep the wind at bay on hunting and fishing expeditions.

Nowadays, moleskin trousers are available in a wide range of colours and make a versatile addition to any wardrobe. Casual enough for running errands at the weekend, add a jacket and they’re easily smart enough for a night out.

Let’s take a look at the competition…

Weighing-in with effortless charm, corduroy trousers are a casual staple of every gentleman’s winter wardrobe. The textured ridges of this soft cotton fabric make them very warm, yet surprisingly light to wear.

A traditional fabric, corduroy can be traced all the way back to ancient Egypt. By 200AD this Egyptian cotton cloth had migrated to Europe where it later became a favourite in French court. Popular as durable workwear trousers amongst the British working classes, cords quickly gained popularity amongst the wealthy elite who found that they kept out the winter chill in their large, drafty homes.

These days cord trousers are as egalitarian as they come – the soft, warm ridged fabric is naturally tactile and effortlessly stylish. Worn with a Fisherman’s jumper or a heritage tweed jacket, your cords take you from the sofa to the smartest restaurant in town, with nonchalant ease.

And there we have it – which will you choose?
