Pulling on a rugged jumper on a frosty morning is a pleasure which, like the smell of freshly roasted coffee, or the crackle of the fire in the hearth, is one of the best compensations for our long winters.
We all love the cosy texture of winter knitwear – which is why we’ve searched high and low to deliver a fantastic range of men’s jumpers to warm your cockles this season. Here are seven of our favourite rugged jumpers to cover everything from long country walks through to a night in with Netflix.
Aran knit jumpers
Standing guard over the entrance to Galway Bay in western Ireland, the three Aran islands are rocky, inhospitable isles whose inhabitants traditionally caught fish and knitted sweaters from unwashed sheep’s wool. The smell must have been incredible, but at least the lanolin in the yarn kept folk dry in filthy weather.
Our Aran jumpers are a tad more sophisticated than the original sweaters – and definitely washed – but they’re still made from 100% heavy gauge wool. Unlike the original un-dyed jumpers, our Arans are also available in a range of colours. Wear yours with moleskins for country walks.
Men of the sea require jumpers that stand up to the chill salt air. That’s why ours are made from 100% wool. A chunky knit, this sweater is ideal when setting your nets – or strolling to your local for the catch of the day.
We’ve created our range of fisherman’s jumpers using warm, earthy tones which are perfect for the colder months. Choose a deep wine-coloured jumper to go with your moleskin trousers and Tattersall shirt, or perhaps go for a brown or dark olive sweater to complement indigo jeans.
Zip neck jumpers
Need the warmth of wool without the risk of overheating? A zip neck jumper offers excellent versatility. Made from a 50/50 wool-cotton mix, this sweater is superb for indoor use, or as a layer to wear under your car coat.
Wear your zip neck sweater over a plain t-shirt for pub lunches with friends, trips to the cinema or theatre, or for casual wear about the house. Unzipped, it has a laid back nonchalance. Zipped up, you’ll keep the wind out in style whenever you step outside.
Roll neck jumpers
A roll neck sweater does so much more than keep the crick out of your neck. This quality jumper lends you a sleek silhouette and gives you the dapper air of a latter day Michael Caine.
Wear your roll neck under a blazer for the sleekly intelligent look beloved of academics, or to give your ensemble a nautical flavour, pair it with a peacoat. But the way to really rock a roll neck is to wear it with contrasting colours and textures. Think tweed jacket or corduroy trousers.
Button neck jumpers
With its distinctive ‘waffle knit’, this button neck jumper keeps you warm and comfortable by trapping air between its stitches whilst allowing your skin to breathe. Made from a 50% wool, 50% cotton mix yarn, it’s toasty enough for winter wear without stifling you to death the moment you step indoors.
A wonderfully casual jumper, this is the one to reach for when you’re off out with the family at the weekend. Perfect for layering, the chunky texture goes well with other tactile fabrics like moleskin, corduroy or denim, and looks great with a Harrington or bomber jacket over the top.
Fair Isle jumpers
A jumper that hails from the tiny island between Orkney and the Shetlands, it was Edward, Prince of Wales who first made this distinctive sweater famous. The prince first wore his natty patterned sweater in public in 1921, sparking a surge of interest in the traditional knits of the chilly North Atlantic that’s never faded.
A classic winter jumper, our Fair Isle sweater stays true to the spirit of the original, while adapting to modern life by switching all wool for a 50% wool, 50% cotton mix. Available in a range of seasonal colours, a Fair Isle looks good with dark jeans and chunky winter boots.
A jumper that’s man enough to keep the military warm is sure to cope with a little frost. And what better way for a chap to stay warm on the coldest of days than by sporting a jumper that’s the epitome of rugged stylishness? Made from 50% wool and 50% cotton, our medium weight ribbed jumpers are toasty, breathable and versatile. Wear yours with jeans or moleskin trousers, leather boots, and a substantial field jacket.
As the immortal Alfred Wainwright once said: “There’s no such thing as bad weather, only unsuitable clothing.” But while there’s nothing you can do to stop the barometer falling, as a Samuel Windsor man, at least you can meet the challenge of chilly days in comfort and style.
